Of quietude: a conciousness stream

It’s been quiet for you lately

Some construction sounds

Here & there

Always the birds

Mostly it’s welcome peace

Of mind & body

The threats

The shouting

Through hallways

Stopped

Still there can be disquiet

Internal & external

Rustlings

As new leaves come in

As blossoms send memos

Of arrival

You remember trajectories

Impacts & outcomes

You work in

Stillness set in chaos

Until you can’t

Dreams

All kinds

Of dreams

Exhortations

Exhorting against
What doesn’t
Make sense

Somersaults
Summertime

Turning over
Being

Over & over

Vertigo
Epiphanies

Senses
Enable
Fates

Ten things
Which didn’t
Happen

Ten things
Which did

Cartwheels
Trampolines
Fun between
Turmoil

Sombre enablings
Between sunny
Possibilities

Life meets
Itself
Under shine
& starry
Nights

Exhortations
Television
Realizations

I don’t
Belong
To anyone

& that’s how
I like it

Another near death experience

Cn: implied ipv (intimate partner violence). Not explicit or graphic. Discursive.

When love

Is experienced

As abandonment

By violence

Or otherwise…

Because violence

Is also abandonment

Of a kind

& paradoxically

Control is

Also abandonment

The abandonment

Of a loved one’s

True & whole self

Underneath veneers

Of prescience

Possibility

A tree grows

In place of

Accountability

The tree a connection

To reality

Branches reaching

In naked vulnerability

Through winter storm

Clothed coming around

In summer’s leafy

Adornments

How […]

Another near death experience

Writing & rewriting

I have written it out

In so many ways now

& still I don’t know

If I’ve gotten to

The essence of it

Or if that’s even possible

In this universe

So I keep writing about it

Keep re-writing about it

As things come to me

I realize that

We were we

& that while

There are so many

Tears to cry

About us

I wouldn’t be who

Peach

1

When in the spring
Of a still colder
Temperament
Upon the roadside
After rain
Tulips

Pleasant
Meetings
Eating snacks
On Thursdays
In May
Under trees
By Busy
Food stands

Exchanging
Conversation
Fortunate noon

Your innate
Understanding
Your underwhelm
Towards those
Ontological
Those
Epistemological
Fallacies
We take
For granted

I loved it

2

Between tasks
& excruciating
Chronic pain
I wrote 8 poems
& hid them away

Then a day went by
I was happy
Really happy
You know?

I shared
Everything
Thinking
Only good
Could come

Then more lies
An infinity
Of mistruths

Surrounded

I read
That lovesong
Again
You know
The one
With the
Peach

& the women
Coming & going
I’d hoped they’d
Speak of
Van Gogh

They say he was a
Pretty good guy
Nice to children
A significant
Measure of good character
His art improved
When he got
Mental healthcare

I believe it

I don’t think
You could paint
The sky like that
If you weren’t nice
& didn’t struggle
With the mind’s eyes

Who knows
Maybe that’s
Another fallacy

Window-panes
Pithy philosophies

I hadn’t read it
For a long time
It reminded me

Of you

I wanted
To tell you
I wanted to say

I’ll always roll
My trousers
& gaze up gently
Towards the æther

The vast universe

Beautiful darkness

Sparsely lit

Pearlescent

There is so much

To say about it

Hazy afternoons

Hazy afternoon
Delving into
Naps & lazy
Consciousnesses
Books & magazines

Covers
Typical
& not so
Typical
Beauty

Lonely
Then not
So lonely
Learning
To be inside
A realm

What is
& what
Is not

Construction

Construction
Time
Again

Gorgeous
Gingersnap
Cookies
But they
Were Soft

Looking
Up from
Naps
& groggy
Favours

Sipping
Orange
Juice
Tea
&
Flowers
Snacks

Oh how I loved
You back then

2

Toast & toasts
& coasters
Laid out on
The coffee table

Guests
Arriving
You hide that
Thing for later

A letter
Arrives
Before they do

The flavours
The smell of coffee

You open it
The envelope
Let out a sigh

Doorbell
The guests
Arrive

Private things
Are brushed aside
The letter placed
Down near a flower

Cut

You catch the name
A distant relative
To you
A near stranger

Tears well up
In her eyes

She hugs the people
On the stairs
Perfume & paintings
Grace the air

Stairwell

Climbing up
We wonder
Will she ever
Be okay again?

No wonder
Someone says
Under their breath

Flowers

You wield flowers

In your pocket

As if nothing

Bothers you

The stems

Like beautiful

Pens

Daisies

& forget me nots

Peonies & lilacs in your skirt

Skipping along the sidewalk

Unbothered

Immersed

In reveries

Writing stories

Etched on clouds

& on the skies

Beautiful writings

On your mind’s eye

The wind whispers

Against your

SkinIn the air

You take in

Feelings

& observations

Of the day

In your imagination

Fairies turn weather

Into magic houses

With unicorns

As […]

Sometimes

Cn: implied (nothing graphic or explicit) ipv (intimate partner violence). A poetic discussion & reflection. No direct discussion of violence.

Sometimes

I can’t forget

What it felt like

To love you

It was beautiful

& it was scary too

I wonder if

Sometimes you

Remember what

It was like

To love me too

Or if you did at all

If that was love

Or something

Superficial

As […]

Sometimes

Treasure

You are what you eat
You’ll become digested
Well love it isn’t felt
No love is tested
~ Tom Smith

Anarchy
Allegory

About

Authority

Treasure
Treasure

Pendulum
Don’t you
Just ignore
It

No
This isn’t
Going to
Be going
Anywhere

The condition
Of the flowers
The air sings
Songs about it

Those winds
Speak words

You eat your cake
& have it too
Don’t you?

Motocar
Motorcar
Locomotive

Racing
Down
The
Speedway

Over &
Over
You
Played
Her

& then
You penned
A poem
About it

As if fiction
Could solve it

Sometimes it does
Doesn’t it?

You digest the prize
Of the æons of tries
They always
Told you
What you were

They were wrong
Weren’t they?
Yes they were wrong
They were
They were

Authour’s note: This is another poem for day 17 of glopowrimo using the Word of the Day Challenge prompt ‘digest’.

Equivalent to me to an ekphrasis, but about the song Like Treasure by Editors. The beginning part refers to the song. As the piece goes along, it tells a story kind of interpreted from the lyrics, but it’s own thing. A composite version of an ekphrasis about music.

I’ve been trying to write an ekphrastic poem forever, but I’m kind of working on some things about visual art pieces in the back of my mind.

In the meantime, I thought I’d go with Tom Smith’s allegory & kind of do a practice using music.

By far my favourite version of this song is one he recently recorded for his instagram. You can watch it here. I hope you enjoy the song & my poem. 💜🎶🌙🌷🌿

Talented

She has a talent for comedy. Comedy takes a lifetime to learn. & I find she often downplays her knowledge or her skill. This sometimes leads to maybe a distraction. Sometimes that magically works itself out in the writing. But sometimes I wish comedians didn’t feel so compelled to build a persona around insecurity.

Like, imagine she ran a writers’ room, & she’s so incredibly quick-witted, but you’d never know she’d organized a whole room for daily television. Not that people should brag, but I think I learned that comedy writing is kind of  undervalued in terms of how it’s viewed in comparison with other genres of writing.

The thing is comedy writing is one of the hardest kinds of writing. We know this. & she knows it too. Plus making people laugh is a real gift no matter what. I hope the most talented comedians such as her know that. Whether they admit it or not.

Authour’s note: For the Word of the Day Challenge prompt ‘talent’ & I’m including it as a picee for Day 15 of glopowrimo, my last poem of the day.

A little story that’s a mini prosey ode to the comedy writer who downplays their work.

It’s poetic & I’ve written enough specifically on prompts focusing on my poetry structure this month, that a little prose exercise felt like it would be good for my poetry & my writing in general at this point.
